Texans Receiver Re-signed To Roster For The Third Time In One Week

September 5, 2022

Has this veteran Texans WR finally secured a spot on the team after being re-signed for the third time in just a week?

Veteran wide receiver Chris Conley has had an eventful week to say the least. It all started when last Tuesday, the final day for the Texans to narrow down their 53-man roster, Conley was part of an unfortunate group of players cut from the team. At the time, the move was somewhat surprising as Conley had served the Texans well in 2021, catching 22 passes for 323 yards and two touchdowns. In addition to these numbers, he had made several impressive grabs throughout this years training camp and preseason.

A few days later, it appeared the Texans had realized their mistake, as they brought Conley back to the team. He was able to join the 53-man roster, as Houston placed three other players on injury reserve, opening up additional spots. However, Conley’s return only lasted a day, as the team traded for tight end OJ Howard. In order to make room for the young star, the Texans yet again got rid of Conley, sending him back to free agency.

Despite being cut twice in one week, there were rumors that Conley’s time in Houston was not over. In the words of team reporter Aaron Wilson, “that’s the value of having a good relationship with a veteran player to create roster space”.

Enter in Marlon Mack. The 26 year old running back was signed to a one year deal during the offseason to takeover as the Houston’s lead workhorse out of the backfield. However, Mack had a rather underwhelming preseason. Unfortunately, the once budding star has never looked the same since a torn Achilles which has limited him to just 32 carries for 127 yards since 2020. Couple this with the sudden emergence of rookie running back Dameon Pierce, who already looks like a superstar, and Mack was an easy candidate for the Texans to demote to the practice squad.

That brings us to earlier today, September 5th, when Marlon Mack was cut for good and Chris Conley was once again brought back, this time as a member of the practice squad. Hopefully Mack gets another shot to prove his worth somewhere else. As for Conley he is back on the team (for now) and should be a reliable contributor when called upon.
