Can the Texans close out the preseason undefeated in a home test against the 49ers?
On Thursday the 24th of August the Texans will face off against the 49ers in NRG Stadium. The game will start at 8:15 EST and will be televised on Amazon Prime Thursday Night Football. The 49ers are 3.5 point favorites according to DraftKings. This game will mark the Texans third, and final preseason game of the 2022 season, and they will hope to close out with a win before the regular season starts.
What To Expect Heading Into The Game
The 49ers enter tomorrow’s game with a 2-0 preseason record, and wish to end their preseason on a high as well. They defeated the Vikings last week, 17-7, behind a stellar performance from their defense and run game. Second year QB Trey Lance did not appear in that game, but HC Kyle Shannahan has confirmed that Lance and the rest of the starters will play to the end of the first half at most.
That first half will be vital for both teams, it will mainly feature week one starters, as Lovie Smith also stated that the Texans will play many of their starters for “a lot more” on Thursday night. After playing the entire first half in last week’s game vs the Rams. Davis Mills will likely play that again at a minimum.
In the game vs Las Angeles Mills got off to a slow start, until hitting Nico Collins for a touchdown with only a second to spare in the first half. It will be important for Mills to have more consistent play vs the 49ers, as it will be the last game experience he has until suiting up against the Colts week 1.
While the first half will be telling, the second will also be extremely important. The Texans will have twenty-seven cuts to make in order to get to a 53 man roster, so many players will be fighting for a roster spot. This includes Wide Receivers Jalen Camp and Johnny Johnson III. Both players had strong debuts but struggled last week vs the Rams. They will both be entering make it or break it games on whether they will make the team. With twenty-seven players to go though, it is definitely unlikely.
Camp and Johnson are definitely two players to keep an eye on, but there are a few other names that Texans fans should watch closely.
Top Texans Players To Watch
QB Davis Mills
Keep tabs on Davis Mills through this game. Quarterback is the most important position on the field, and having Mills riding into the season hot will certainly boost the Texans chances of success early on. On the flip side, if he struggles in this game, it could lead to even more struggling when the season rolls around.
G Kenyon Green
Coach Lovie Smith made it known that Kenyon Green will make his debut tomorrow, however not as a starter. This is likely because Green is still recovering from his injury and is not yet ready to play the full time of a starter. Regardless, it will be interesting to see how he fares against the San Francisco defensive line. Hopefully he will be ready to make his first start in week one.
CB Derek Stingley Jr.
Derek Stingley Jr. made his preseason debut in last week’s contest vs the Rams. He had a fairly strong showing, capped off with an excellent pass breakup. If he can continue to show encouraging signs vs the 49ers, then that will set the tone for the 2022 season.
Notable Texans Injuries
- DT Ross Blacklock is Out with a leg injury
- CB Tavierre Thomas is still Out after hurting his Quadriceps
- DE Ogbo Okoronkwo is Out with an undisclosed injury
- K Ka’imi Fairbairm is Out with an undisclosed injury

Final Thoughts And Predictions
Score Prediction: Texans 30 Niners 20
I think that the offense will get off to a much better start than they did last week and have a high scoring first half. They’ll continue that momentum in the second half and finish with their first, and only thirty point game of the season. The defense will continue its stellar play, and hold Trey Lance and the 49ers to a mere twenty points.
